Google Panda. From 2011 standalone classifier to 2016 core integration to post-March-2024 distributed signal.

Panda launched on February 23, 2011 as the on-page quality classifier. Patented as US 8,682,892 granted March 25, 2014. Integrated into the core ranking pipeline in January 2016. The signal layer continues inside the post-March-2024 distributed core ranking systems.

The launch and the first five years

Panda launched on February 23, 2011 as the on-page quality classifier. The initial rollout targeted US English search; international rollouts followed through 2011 and 2012. The original signal layer evaluated thin content, scraped content, low original-research depth, and content-density patterns at page level.

Several version refreshes shipped through 2014 (Panda 1.0 through Panda 4.x). Each refresh re-evaluated the signal layer against the current corpus and adjusted weights. The discrete rollout cycle continued until January 2016, when Google confirmed Panda had been integrated into the core ranking pipeline. The discrete rollout ended; the signal continued to operate inside core.

The patent

The patent reference is US 8,682,892, "Ranking search results," filed September 28, 2012 and granted March 25, 2014. The patent describes the on-page quality signals and the sitewide modification factor Panda uses to weight pages against query-cluster ranking. The sitewide modification factor is what gave Panda its sitewide-effect read on the traffic curve: even pages with strong individual content could lose ranking signal because the broader site carried sections that read as thin.

The patent does not encode the full algorithm; it covers the conceptual model. The practical signal layer evolves. The core model (sitewide modification factor weighting per-page ranking against the broader site-quality read) holds.

The post-2016 core era and post-March-2024 distributed surface

Since January 2016 Panda's signal layer runs continuously inside the core ranking pipeline. The signal evaluates as the core re-reads the corpus; there is no discrete Panda refresh window to monitor for recovery.

Since the March 5, 2024 Core Update redistributed adjacent classifier signals across multiple core ranking systems, the on-page quality surface Panda evaluates has joined a broader distributed-signal model.
